Roles

Roles -

  • Whole Group: Editing Process
  • Whole Group: Camera-men
  • Atekka and Zafreen: Lead Singers "Monica + Brandy"
  • Chelsea: Secondary Actor
  • Syed: Male Actor, "Cheating Boyfriend"

Costume/Props List

Costume/Props List -
  • The lead singers Atekka and Zafreen will need to wear feminine, girly clothing to make sure they look the part; also to enhance the video a few wardrobe changes will look good. We will also need phones so that it appears that we are on the phone to each other in some scenes. As as it isn't a performance video, props are not really needed.
This image gives some ideas to the type of clothes and accessories that the girls could use to portray the right sort of girl.
  • Chelsea could wear a typical girls clothes as she will be acting the part of a comforting friend.
  • Syed will need to fit the role of a cheating boyfriend so should also dress accordingly.

Locations

Locations - Locations are important in our music video so we are going to aim to get a number of locations, to enhance the production. For example,
  • Piccadilly Gardens

  • This is a good location because it shows an urban area and is an area that would be visited by couples and would be used by girls to socialise. A problem we may have is that it's a busy area so will be difficult to not have people walking into shots.
  • Deansgate Bridge

We took these images when we were
searching for good locations. It was reasonably quiet especially compared to Piccadilly gardens which was much busier. Its a picturesque location that will look appropiate in our filming.

  • Cafe e.g. Starbucks/Cafe Nero

We also took these photos; we were thinking of using starbucks as its a instantly recognisable coffee shop that many of the target audience would use. We wrote an official permission letter from our college to gain access to film in Starbucks. We were worried it would be difficult to not film the public who were in the background but Starbucks in St Annes Square gave us an exclusive area in the corner which meant that this difcculty was sorted out.

  • Bar or Restaurant

This is a good location because the age of the artists show that this is place that they would come with friends and boyfriend/girlfriends. I like the lighting gin this place however it may cause some difficulty in the shots in terms of visibility.

Friday 1st October 2009
We are going to go to visit our locations and take
some pictures. We will plan how we will film particular shots so that we make the best of our surroundings; if we have time we will also film the establishing shots that we may decide to use in the opening of the music video.

Panning the Music Video and what the Videos about..

The song my group and I have decide to do is a song called 'That Boy is mine' By Brandy and Monica.

Brandy:Excuse me, can I please talk to you for a minute?

Monica:Uh huh, sure you know, you look kinda familiar.

Brandy:Yeah, you do too but, umm, I just wanted to know do you know somebody named you, you know his name.

Monica:Oh, yeah definatly, I know his name.

Brandy:I just wanted to let you know he's mine.

This is the opening of the song, Just before the first verse starts.
The video is a narrative video and is basiclly about a guy who is palying two girls behind their backs, but unexpectedly geta caught out in the end..

Our video is also going to be narrative but also feature a bit of disjuncture because there will be some performance involved which has nothig to do with what is going on in the video..

Plan:

Thursday1st of October: Take out Tha Camera and Tripod.

Friday 2nd of October: chek out all the different locations we are hoping to shoot our video at and begin filming the first half..

Shot List

As a group we are currently deciding to have a location for every verse such as when Brandy and Monica sing, to have it in one set location i.e
This could be shot in one place such as in a cafe.

The shots may include:

Brandy:

I think it's time we got this straight - A high angel shot on one girl sat in a cafe following

Let's sit and talk face to face - A low angel shot on the other girl standing up

There is no way you could mistake - switching between the two shots

Him for your man are you insane

Monica:

You see I know that you may be

Just bit jealous of me

Cuz you're blind if you can't see

That his love is all in me

Brandy:

You see I tried to hesitate - 180 degree Rule could apply here switching from

I didn't wanna say what he told me shot to shot of one girl lip-syncing the lyrics and the

He said without me he couldn't make other girl's reaction towards it and vise-versa.

It through the day ain't that a shame -Including the 180 degree shot, we could have a

Monica:Maybe you misunderstood two-shot of the two girls sat opposite one another

Cause I can't see how he could

Wanna change something that's so good

But my love is all it took

Both:You need to give it up

Had about enough

It's not hard to see

The boy is mine

I'm sorry that you

Seem to be confused

He belongs to me

The boy is mine

Other verses could include a Pan shot having one girl walk in to the shot perhaps walking on a street. Other shots could involve one girl lip-syncing the lyrics to her friends when she's out with them and the other girl could be talking to her friend on the phone lip-syncing the lyrics this could include having close-up shots and medium shots.

Our initial idea is to film the song in one location at a time and when we start editing we can match the best footage for the best verse we have filmed.

Shot List Ideas

Shot List/ Ideas - Although we enjoyed watching the original video to "The boy is mine" we've chosen to stick with the idea of the girls singing along with the song but also adding some ideas of our own.
In one shots, we will see the guy eating with one girl in a restaurant and then the camera will cut to a shot of the guy eating at the same table with a different girl; this would be a narrative shot as its showing that he is cheating on both girls.

There will be many shots of the girls lip-syncing in different locations, doing different things. For example one of the girls maybe walking down a street in the city centre whereas in another shot, one girl would be sitting down in a cafe.

Throughout the video the two girls are arguing over who deserves the boy and who he loves more. But at the end of the video the two girls have worked together to deceive the guy. He comes to see one girl and finds that both girls are there together. The shot list will be completed in detail by Zafreen.

Initial Idea

Introduction - We are going to begin our media A-level production, to produce a pop video. It can be in the genre of our groups choice and it has to be a suitable song. we have researched different types of media videos, which use narrative, performance or a mixture of both. we are going to use performance with some disjucture. Mainly the narrative will be illustrative but at points it may not be.

Genre - As our song is in the genre of rnb, we thought that we would stick to the conventions of a typical rnb video. We researched different rnb videos that are both old and new; in another post we will be analysing a particular rnb video.

Song choice - "The boy is mine" by Monica and Brandy. As a group of 3 girls and 1 boy, we decided that this would be a good song choice. Not only could the girls relate to the themes in the song e.g. love and betrayal, the girls could also do the performance in the video - this means we don't have to rely on others to do the acting. A similar song to ours is usher/r kelly - same girl however that is about two guys talking about a cheating girl whereas our song is about two girls talking about a cheating boy.

Analysis of Music Video

Before we began to choose our own song, we decided to watch other music videos to get an idea of what a music video is like and what song to choose.

Supersonic - Oasis

The genre of this song is Rock/ Brit pop. As a group we didn't enjoy songs from this genre however we thought that it was a good video to analyse. The generic features of Rock/ Brit pop are that the band is shown playing; there is a strong focus on the instruments and the lead singer. There is a particular mise en scene used, with the use of outfits and accessories. Also a technical aspect that's used by this genre regularly is the camera shaking allot and a fast pace.
In this video, intertextuality is used in reference to The Beatles, the song lyric "yellow submarine" and the appearance of Liam Gallagher.
In terms of narrative elements, Oasis uses disjuncture; this could be because of content of the lyrics being 'random'.
In terms of performance elements, there as a high amount of performance in the video. There is a strong focus on the lead singer Liam Gallagher's, with close-ups of his face and extreme close-ups of his mouth.
The stars are represented as having a celebrity status, with the use of a chauffeur driven car and the rock-star image.
